BRIDGE IN - Your Employer of Record in Portugal
Employer of Record: how does it work?
An Employer of Record (EOR) allows businesses to hire employees in Portugal (or any other foreign country) without setting up a subsidiary or a branch.
It acts as an intermediary, assuming legal responsibility for HR, payroll, tax compliance, and other employment-related matters on behalf of the hiring company.
Using an Employer or Record in Portugal
Partnering with an EOR in Portugal (or other markets) gives companies access to a local talent pool without establishing a physical presence.
Navigating foreign employment laws and regulations, however, can be daunting. As your EOR, we handle all legal and tax obligations, reducing non-compliance risks.

Key Benefits of Team Scaling Through EOR
Navigating international expansion: expect the unexpected
When you enter countries where you haven’t experience operating and have no in-depth knowledge of the regulatory framework, miscalculating timelines and underestimating potential costs are common mistakes.
A general rule of thumb is that no matter where you want to gain an international presence, everything will take longer and be more expensive than you think.
Overcoming employment and payroll challenges in Portugal, Spain and Italy
The challenge of meeting employment, payroll, and work visa requirement rules can be a significant obstacle to business expansion.
The do-it-yourself approach of incorporation can be costly and resource-draining. Hiring independent contractors may not be the strategy if you’re looking for full-time, loyal contributors.
BRIDGE IN: simplifying compliance in Portugal, Spain and Italy
This is where BRIDGE IN’s local, fully-owned EOR service in Portugal comes in handy.
As a local EOR, we ensure that the complexity, cost, and compliance risk of employment in Portugal are all managed—with no risk of incurring any regulatory violations, including complex, new compliance rules such as GDPR.

Portugal, Spain and Italy Employer of Record F.A.Q.
-
An Employer of Record is a third-party company that legally hires employees on your behalf. The EOR manages payroll, benefits, tax, and compliance, allowing your business to operate in Portugal without setting up a legal entity.
-
It allows you to quickly onboard full-time employees in Portugal while BRIDGE IN handles all local employment obligations — so you can scale without infrastructure delays or legal risk.
-
With an EOR, BRIDGE IN is the legal employer — ideal if you want a fully outsourced and risk-free setup.
In Foreign Employer Registration, your company is the direct employer, and you’re responsible for legal compliance — best for companies wanting more control without full incorporation. BRIDGE IN can still help you stay on the right side of compliance by taking care of the registration os the non-resident company and running payroll.
-
Yes. EOR is often a transitional solution. Once you’re ready to establish your own company in Portugal, BRIDGE IN can help with the transition.
-
Once you have identified your candidate, most hires can be fully onboarded within 48 hours. If you are outsourcing both recruitment and EOR to us, instead, the full process of screening, shortlisting and onboarding can take up to 4 weeks.
-
Absolutely. EOR services are fully legal and compliant when managed by a local partner like BRIDGE IN with in-country expertise and infrastructure.
-
Yes. BRIDGE IN is a certified Portuguese startup with its own local legal entity and operational infrastructure. As a result, employees hired through our EOR model who relocate to Portugal may qualify for the IFICI tax incentive program (old NHR).
The IFICI (NHR 2.0) is a special tax regime granting tax benefits to highly qualified professionals who become tax residents in Portugal for 10 years. Eligible income is taxed at a fixed 20% rate, while foreign-source income is generally exempt but must be reported.
