The 7 FAQs of Working for a Remote Company from Portugal

There are some key points to consider when looking for a job abroad. The Internet wonders allow you to be closer than ever to your team, and that extends to almost every working area (that requires a computer and a stable Internet connection).

That may be one of your goals (you wouldn’t be here otherwise, right?), and we bet you’ve more doubts than certainties.

Let’s cover the main ones.

1. Can I Work Remotely from Portugal?

Absolutely! Remote work has no geographical boundaries.

All you need is a reliable internet connection and the required skills for the job. From then on, you can work from the comfort of your home – a cafe, coworking, or another place you love – in Portugal while collaborating with colleagues worldwide.

But you’ll need to comply with some rules, and that mostly depends on how you’re employed: through a regular contract under foreign employing, or via Employer of Record, or a  freelance/contractor agreement. So, make sure to know all of these factors before accepting any deal.

If you aren’t a Portuguese national, you must also know how long you plan to stay around. If you stay in Portugal for over 183 days, consider the NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) tax regime to enjoy reduced tax rates for 10 years.

Anticipate this before it’s too late, and you end up paying double taxation.

2. Can I Work Remotely in Portugal Without a Visa?

It depends.

If you’re a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) citizen, you don’t need a Visa. You can live and work in Portugal under the freedom of movement principle.

However, if you’re a non-EU/EEA citizen, you may need a Visa or residence permit that allows you to work for a remote company from Portugal. You should check all the requirements with your country's Portuguese embassy or consulate.

3. I’m a UK national: Can I Work for a UK Company While Living in Portugal?

Yes, you can! The sky’s the limit.

The beauty of remote work is that it allows you to work for any remote company, regardless of location – including those who don’t have a single office. If you dream of having breakfast at your own pace while working for a UK-based company, go for it!

But remember that the UK left the European Union. If you’re a UK national, you’ll need a Visa to work remotely from Portugal.

4. I am a US national: Can I Live in Portugal and Work for a US Company?

It gets a bit tricky, but of course you can.

Many US companies hire remote employees worldwide, including Portugal, but, as a US national, you might need a specific work Visa. It all comes down to the type of contract or work agreement you’ll sign with the company.

That’s why you shouldn’t do that alone.

You should look for legal and tax professionals to ensure you comply with Portuguese and US regulations. Tax implications, residency status, and potential double taxation are a reality.

And, if you aren’t in the country already, there are some things you need to know before moving to Portugal.

5. Can I Live in Europe and Work Remotely for a US Company?

You can!

If you’re not living in Portugal but in another European country, you can work for a remote company in the US. Watch out for time zone differences (if required) to ensure everything meets your standards and schedules.

6. Does Portugal have Remote Work Visas?

Portugal has 3 remote work Visas: the D7 Visa, the Digital Nomad Visa, and the D2 Visa (also known as the Immigrant Entrepreneur Visa, though you must open and establish a company in Portugal to ask for this Visa).

They all allow you to work for a remote company from Portugal.

7. Will I Receive Any Remote Work Allowance in Portugal?

You will as long as you have a contract. According to Portuguese labor law, you don’t necessarily need it to be written – but you do need some verbal agreement, at least, with your employer (to receive the remote work allowance).

Currently, the country offers a remote work allowance to eligible employees, making it even more enticing for those who choose to establish here.

The allowance doesn’t have a fixed price. It depends on your agreement with the employer, though we suggest €30 per month. Your employer must also provide you with all the tools required for the job, like a laptop.

But that’s not all, as there are many more benefits if you want to work in Portugal.

Embarking on a remote work journey for international companies can be life-changing. All you need is adaptability, effective communication, and a proactive attitude.

So, there are endless possibilities – whether you're considering joining a UK-based team, collaborating with a US company, or embracing remote work elsewhere while living in beautiful Portugal.

Well, you know what time it is. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile, and get ready to showcase your skills. Your dream job with that remote company might be just a few clicks away!
